PHOT 101 Black & White Photography I (3 credits)
Black and White Photography I is an introductory course in traditional film-based photography, teaching 35mm camera operation and wet darkroom techniques. Course includes 30 hours of lecture and 30 hours of lab per semester. No previous photography experience is required. A 35mm film camera capable of manual exposure operation is required. Course fee.
PHOT 102 Black & White Photography II (3 credits)
Black and White Photography II is an advanced course in photographic techniques, styles and aesthetics. The refinement of camera exposure techniques, negative quality and print quality is emphasized. Course includes 30 hours of lecture and 30 hours of lab per semester. A 35mm film camera capable of manual exposure operation is required. Course fee.

PHOT 103 Darkroom Workshop (3 credits)
The Darkroom Workshop is an individualized course in darkroom techniques. Students may experiment with a variety of films, papers and processes. The course concentrates on refining the photographic process with individualized supervision in the darkroom. Course fee. Usually offered in summer session.

PHOT 105 Through the Lens: Exploring Documentary Photography (3 credits)
Discover the art of documentary photography and master the skill of visual storytelling. This course explores the techniques, ethics, and creative process of capturing real-world subjects through compelling narratives. Through hands-on fieldwork, students develop advanced composition and post-processing skills specific to documentary photography. With an emphasis on social issues and cultural diversity, students create a portfolio of impactful documentary projects ready for exhibition or portfolio presentation. Course fee.
PHOT 121 Introduction to Photography for Non-Majors (GAH) (3 credits)
This introductory course in photography is designed for students from various academic backgrounds and majors. Through a combination of learning modules, interactive assignments, and engaging discussions, students will acquire a strong foundation in the art and practice of photography. Whether you're a beginner or have some prior experience, this course will empower you to explore the world of photography from its origins with the camera obscura, through to the modern DSLR, mirrorless, and smartphone photography of today. Students will need a smartphone camera to complete the course assignments. Neither DSLR nor mirrorless camera is required for this class but may certainly be utilized if available. Course fee.
PHOT 131 Fundamentals of Digital Photography (3 credits)
Students will embark on a transformative exploration in Fundamentals of Digital Photography, mastering camera operation, composition, lighting, and post-processing. They will engage in creative projects, explore various genres, and navigate ethical considerations. They will immerse themselves in lectures, hands-on sessions, and critiques, refining their skills in the captivating realm of digital photography. Course fee.

PHOT 202 Alternative Photographic Processes (3 credits)
This course concentrates on the use of alternative processes, analogue and digital, in the creation of photographic images. Emphasis is on the development of a personal, self-expressive style through the use of traditional and non-traditional materials, media, equipment, and presentation strategies. Students taking PHOT 202 cannot receive credit for this course and PHOT 201. Course includes 30 hours of lecture and 30 hours of lab per semester. Course fee.
PHOT 206 Studio Lighting (3 credits)
This advanced course concentrates on the use of studio lighting procedures and equipment in the creation of portraiture and still life images in the studio and on location. Students taking PHOT 206 cannot receive credit for this course and PHOT 205 and/or PHOT 207. Course includes 30 hours of lecture and 30 hours of lab per semester. Course fee.
PHOT 209 The History of Photography (3 credits)
The History of Photography is a survey of the development of photography from its prehistory through today. The course includes the study of the interrelationships between photography and the other visual arts, the effects of changing technologies on the photographic image, and the contributions of major photographers and art movements, as well as historical perspectives. This course may require field trips.
PHOT 231 Advanced Digital Photography (3 credits)
This course builds on foundational digital photography skills, focusing on advanced techniques in image capture, composition, and post-processing. Students will work with both DSLR and mirrorless cameras to gain creative control and produce high-quality images in various genres, such as portrait, landscape, and conceptual photography. Emphasis will be placed on mastering manual camera settings, advanced lighting techniques, and professional editing software. Students will also focus on developing a personal photographic style and creating a professional portfolio. Course fee.
